Description
Over a span of ten years, the Indonesian PV off-grid has achieved a remarkable achievement through electrification program in more than 1,000 villages and went through at least three technology battery generations namely lead-acid, zinc-air and lithium. This has put Indonesia as one of the few countries in the world with such a number of mini-grids. This report establishes Indonesia’s success and challenges in adopting energy storage with solar photovoltaics (PV) to electrify isolated, remote, and secluded communities within the country, with a strong, emphasize on the program run through the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR). This study is started in December 2018 employing both quantitative and qualitative methods in 22 locations in East Nusa Tenggara – Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province and South Sulawesi – Sulawesi Selatan (Sulsel) province. All of this microgrid projects in this study are publicly funded and the trend of mini-grid projects continue to be largely publicly funded.
